Photos from Recent Reading Events

I was thrilled to give readings in January and February in the Portland area for Liberated and Under False Flags. Gigs included a rewarding warm-up at Homewoods independent living facility, the big event at legendary Powell's Hawthorne, historic Oregon City Public Library, and a busy Barnes & Noble in Beaverton. Thanks to all who came out—the show of support means a lot to an author, especially to a guy who never gave a reading before on his own.

As I said that night at Powell's: it's not the natural state of a writer (at least not this one) to stand before a crowd and perform, but you made it feel natural. I discovered along the way that I enjoy doing it. Thanks to the staffs as well for making it happen.

Look for more readings in the summer of 2015.

Oregonian Essay On the True Tales Behind Novel Liberated

I recently wrote a piece for the Oregonian about the wild early days of the US occupation of Germany as portrayed in Liberated: A Novel of Germany, 1945. It felt like my first byline — I was thrilled to contribute to the newspaper I delivered as a kid. The essay appears online on OregonLive and in print in the Sunday books section. Find it here

The Historical Novels Review on Under False Flags: A Novel

Under False Flags appears in the February issue of the Historical Novels Review, published by the Historical Novel Society in print and online. Here's an excerpt:

"The author clearly brings forth the thoughts, fears, and hopes that run through a soldier’s mind. The dangers and horrors of being a soldier, a civilian living under occupation, or a resistance fighter are well-defined in this book. I liked how the GI narrative voice ... kept the realism alive."
